I am excited for the brand new school year and all the activities this incoming class will accomplish. My main area of focus is based off the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is the standards that all California districts will follow. This new format increases the amount of word problems in math, teaches for understanding, and challenges students creativity through writing. I find this to be a refreshing change and will support students as time goes on.
Furthermore, certain subjects that I feel students need more assistance with is reading, writing, and being able to express their thoughts to another peer or teacher. Finally, Science is often overlooked inside elementary school classes so I would provide more opportunities for students to learn science because technical language/vocabulary is often touted as the difference maker between successful students vs. struggling students. I want your child to succeed beyond my classroom, but a good launch point creates greater results.
This class is mainly used as a staging point for 4th grade, but the values will be useful for the students throughout their lifetime. Teachable moments is a key component of this classroom. This is to make sure that your child has the proper foundation to succeed at the next level. This may require parents to take an active role in your child's upbringing. Parents are an undervalued source of information and the classroom is not the only place where your child can learn life lessons. I will be sending work home at a consistent rate and will be open to any comments about what went on in class. Let's work together to give each student the best possible education that they can receive!
Also, this year will start in distance learning so lets prepare for many learning moments where our emotions might get the best of us. Please bear with the difficulties and potential delays and I will get back to you as fast as I can. Stay safe and be well!
Sincerely,
Mr. Kim
Yearly overnight class field trip to Star of India!
Some students wanted to hand their apples to me instead of putting it on the poster, appreciated either way.
